Noise Reduction with Vinyl Window Installation
As a practical matter, dual pane windows, in their standard configuration, reduce noise, and many customers have commented that outside noise has been almost eliminated. There is, however, an even more effective, yet not very expensive, way to reduce noise even further by manufacturing the windows using dissimilar glass.
For example, a standard dual pane window, using double strength glass, is usually made with two glass panes, 1/8″ over 1/8″. These windows provide surprising noise reduction. We have found, however, that by using dissimilar glass panes, usually 1/8″ over 3/16″, noise is reduced even further, and more dramatically.
Why?
It seems that while 1/8″ glass filters and reduces some frequency ranges, changing the other pane to the 3/16″ glass, reduces even more frequencies, covering a broader range of sound, reducing noise even further.
